Jack and the Beanstalk, Lotte Reiniger (1955)

I have waited for years for Lotte Reiniger Fairy Tales [DVD] [1922] (Amazon UK link) to be released as a Region 1 release here in North America, but alas, I don't think it will ever happen.

So today I offer Reiniger's Jack and the Beanstalk, slightly cut.  But really quite magical with beans and all...

We can get The Adventures of Prince Achmed, but it's not what I really, really want. Thank goodness for YouTube helping to fill the gap a  little.

  1. The German DVDs of her films, available from Amazon.de and probably elsewhere, which are more thorough and have been out before the UK collection, are all regions (but still 576 lines, 50 frames per second "PAL," which may be more the problem considering that this can be an issue with the display rather than the player, and the relatively low cost of multi-region players today).

  2. It also might be worth adding that Michel Ocelot's silhouette animation film Princes and Princesses is available on DVD domestically in the US, and also in one packaged with Kirikou and the Sorceress in Canada which is also region 1, NTSC-style and English-subtitled but is the anamorphic version which reveals more of the image for those with widescreen TVs (mysteriously, neither use the whole, original aspect ratio but crop it in different directions).
